why recruiting new members for the Chapter is considered so important.
The answer is quite simple—more members equal a louder voice. The
Chapter is involved in many different activities including legislative
activities both locally and at the national level. When the Chapter
President or a Board members talks with an elected official, the weight
given to the President’s or Board member’s opinion is dependent upon the
size of the group represented. In our case, the size of the Chapter.
Over the past few years, the Chapter
has been very successful in helping to influence Legislators on several
issues. Just a few years ago, then President Bancroft McKittrick
recommended to a Legislative committee that the state property tax credit
for war time veterans be increased from $50 to $500. This supported
an ongoing effort by many different veterans organizations and Legislators.
Today, the state law has been changed and many towns and cities have increased
the tax credit to some value between $50 and $500. This success is
a direct result of the various veterans groups working together toward
a common goal and using the collective voices of New Hampshire veterans
to effect change.
The bottom line here is that having more members in the Chapter translates to a louder voice when addressing elected officials to solicit their support for various pieces of legislation. Further, more Chapter members also means (Continued on page 2)
